Name & Login Information

Your Legal First Name and Legal Last Name entered here should match the name on your primary ID, which must match any background checks associated with your profile. Additionally, you may be asked to show your ID when meeting other members to promote trust.

Use Nickname if you typically go by a different name when interacting with others. This is where you can be “Meg” instead of “Margaret,” or “Bill” instead of “William.”

Your Last Name is not displayed to other members until you connect with them by accepting their help on a help request or they accept your offer of help.

Pick a unique Username.

Your password must meet the following criteria by having at least:

  • 12 characters
  • 1 uppercase letter
  • 1 lowercase letter
  • 1 special character
  • 1 number

Contact Information

Enter the Email and Phone Number that you use most frequently since you will receive most notifications this way. You will need to verify your Email before you can connect with other members.

Select the Phone Type that corresponds with the phone number you entered. This allows us to signal to other members that can text you for communication, so we recommend using a mobile phone number. Also, Help Handed doesn’t send text notifications yet, but we may allow you to receive notifications this way in the future.

Your Contact Information is not displayed to other members until you connect with them by accepting their help on a help request or they accept your offer of help.

Home Address

Enter your Home Address so it matches your primary ID, which must match any background checks associated with your profile. Additionally, you may be asked to show your ID when meeting other members to promote trust.

Your Street Address is never displayed to another member on Help Handed, but it is useful when using our platform. For example, It will be the default address entry for any help requests you create. If wanting to volunteer, it is used as the default location when browsing help requests.

The City and State from your address will be displayed on your profile to other members.

Your Profile Photo should be a clear and recent photograph of you only. It’s important that the photo be recent enough to look like you when you are meeting with another member for the first time to promote trust and safety.

Volunteer Interest Reason

This information helps people in need decide if they are comfortable accepting your offer of help, or maybe even choosing between you and another volunteer offer. This is the place for you to share:

  1. What motivates you to help others for free.
  2. What special skills you have that may be useful to others.

Preferences

Select all Help Types for which you are willing and able to volunteer with some confidence. Providing this information helps us understand what type of help is available in a given region. Don’t worry, you will not be prevented from volunteering on help requests that do not include your selections here.

Select a Help Delivery option if you have a preference for providing in-person help or remote help. Simply leave these boxes unchecked if you have no preference.

Check the box for Help Request Notifications if you want to receive email notifications when someone nearby requests help. At present, your other preferences do not impact which help requests you are notified about.

Your selected Preferences will not be visible to other members.

Circumstances

Your Circumstances can be an important motivator for volunteers to offer help, so it can be beneficial to include them. Don’t fib here, though. Volunteers will look for evidence of these circumstances when they meet you to confirm your help request is worth their free time. For example, a volunteer might ask to see evidence of your military service. Be ready to share when asked.
